Scientific Adventures in the American Southwest

Private archival edition based on a 1934 field journal documenting early scientific collecting work, close observation of the canyon landscape, and a lifelong fascination with beetles that would later inform the author’s environmental commitments.

The manuscript, rediscovered after more than seventy years, was transcribed and prepared for publication as a custom archival book project. I oversaw editorial preparation, layout, materials selection, and production of a soft leather-bound volume incorporating specimen photography and archival documentation. Copies are now held in major institutional collections, and the subject of the journal, including the Rockefeller beetle collection, is represented in institutions such as the Harvard Museum of Natural History (see the exhibit here).

A New England Pioneer:

The Captivity of Mrs. Johnson

Archival reprint of a previously published captivity narrative first printed in the late eighteenth century and widely circulated through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This custom book reprint reproduces a 1960 edition layout while preserving original typographic structure and historical formatting.

In addition to transcription and faithful reconstruction of the text, authored a scholarly addendum situating the narrative within the broader history of colonial expansion, captivity literature as propaganda, and the racialized mechanisms used to legitimize territorial displacement.

Sir Edward the Gallant

Children’s book developed from a handwritten manuscript and school report. The project included transcription, editorial refinement, illustrator selection, art direction, and full book production management from concept through final print.

With minimal original text, the narrative required substantial visual development. I collaborated closely with the illustrator to shape sequential storytelling, clarify narrative beats, and ensure cohesion between image and text across spreads.

For production, the book was printed as a short-run hardcover edition using HP Indigo digital printing. The cover incorporated extensive gold detailing that would have required over $1,000 in traditional foil stamping dies alone, before setup and press costs. After evaluating both material qualities and production scale, Scodix digital foil was selected. Its raised, high-gloss finish aligned with the energetic, tactile aesthetic of the project while remaining economically sound for a limited run.
